A Poem on the Website of
the Red Dirt Writers Society

The Protesters
by Beth Stephenson (Jan 2012)

I filled the bird-feeder to welcome the winter
Carnival of cardinals, jays and tufted titmice.
Flashes of flaming red, white and blue, racing
Christmas morning chaos, a banquet of birdseed
Squeaking and squawking over sweet sunflower seeds.

A hunting hungry red hawk surveys from the east
Observing the American freeloading feast
Watching and, weighing the greediest, grabbiest.
One wiser than I scatters the acorns and seeds
Disorderly, work-dense, irrespective of Protest.
