A Poem on the Website of
the Red Dirt Writers Society

Reaching
by Beth Stephenson (Sep 2009)

Friend, Don’t go down that path again
For the way is deep
And the edges steep
At the bottom, there is a beach
That seems inviting far below,
But has a dreadful undertow
And the way is farther than I can go.

Friend,
Don’t take that path again
Remember the broken glass
Hidden in the sand?
How arduous the way back up
To where you reach my hand!

Friend!
Do not take that way again!
For injury is at the end!
And after all these friendship years
I’m running short of friendly tears
Don’t justify my anxious fears!
I feel my own weak, feeble knees.
Please! Dear Friend,
Don’t take that path again.
